True Grit Riding High At US Box Office

In a victory for quality filmmaking over cash-in sequelitis, The Coen brothers’ True Grit has triumphed over Little Fockers in its third week at the box office to take the top spot. Grit made $15 million this weekend, with its total now sitting pretty at $110.4 million, making it far and away the most successful Coens release to date.

Little Fockers, which had scored a win the last two weekends, had to make do with second place, but still managed to nab $13.7 million, which means it has now earned $123.9 million. The duelling top pair led to the week’s only new arrival, historical (and occasionally hysterical) Nic Cage adventure Season of the Witch launched in third place with $10 million.

Fourth was Tron Legacy with $9.8 million and Black Swan rounded out the top five with $8.3 million.

Gwyneth Paltrow music drama Country Strong lived up to its name, opening wider and surging from 43rd place to sixth with $7.3 million, while The Fighter slid one place down to seventh and $7 million. The King’s Speech was given the royal treatment, moving up two places to eighth for $6.811 million and Yogi Bear dropped from fourth to ninth place, making $6.810 million. And at 10th, Disney’s ‘toon Tangled wrapped $5.2 million in its blonde locks as it prepared to drop from the top 10.
