Will The TOP GUN Sequel Go Full Maverick??

A week or two ago, we learned that TOP GUN sequel offers had been extended to Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott. At the time this was revealed, word was that Tom Cruise had agreed to appear in the picture in a reduced capacity/extended cameo/or whatever – as long as his “Maverick” character was utilized in a way that wasn’t too obvious.

Now, sequel scripter Christopher McQuarrie (VALKYRIE, THE USUAL SUSPECTS) has contacted Vulture to assert that this is not the case, pointedly indicating: “There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role.”

As for how Maverick fits in with the young, hot-shot, party-boy drone pilots Tony Scott’s been talking about recently? That’s still unclear. Although, perhaps my irrational and unsubstantiated hopes of seeing Maverick living in a one bedroom apartment with Val Kilmer’s Iceman…boozing, drugging, and angry sexing to rid himself of the decaying specter of Goose…who sits at the foot of their bed every night in his flightsuit and cracked helmet admonishing “Why did you kill me, Mav?”…are not altogether lost. Actually, they probably are. And if they’re not, they certainly should be.
